Schengen short-stay visit to family or friends in Germany or the Schengen area, up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Approval depends on showing strong ties to your home country, sufficient funds, and a verifiable relationship with your host.

What you need

  • You must show the host's invitation letter and ID, your relationship with the host, sufficient funds (your own + optionally the host's Verpflichtungserklärung — but the obligation letter does NOT replace your own financial proof for this visa type, both are needed), EUR 30,000 medical insurance with repatriation cover, proof of your situation in Vietnam (employment / self-employment / retirement / student status), and a passport that is valid for at least 3 months from your Schengen exit date.

  • Schengen Visa application form completely filled out and signed by the applicant *
  • Two recent, identical, biometric passport photos (45mm x 35mm) *
  • Original passport or official travel document (No plastic covers/envelopes!) *
  • If the applicant is a minor, a declaration of consent from the parents + birth certificate of the child has to be presented additionally *
  • If the applicant is not a Vietnamese citizen: Vietnamese residence permit for foreigners *
  • Original of expired/old passports or travel documents (in addition to your current passport)
  • Evidence of the financial background of the applicant — e.g. by presenting savings, stock ownership, land use rights, real estate ownership, etc. *
  • Proof of relationship with the host — if the applicant's relationship with the host cannot be confirmed by the family-status documents already submitted, please provide additional documentation proving the relationship / previous contact with the host (e.g. photos, letters, informal written explanation, social media chats etc.)
  • Flight reservation *
  • Compulsory paid travel medical insurance (specifications: valid for all Schengen states, covers entire period of intended stay, covers the cost of emergency treatment and transport to home country for medical reasons, minimum coverage shall be EUR 30,000) *

From your host in Germany

  • Recent, informal and signed invitation letter *
  • If the host is German or EU citizen: copy of the ID card (Personalausweis) – front and back *
  • If the host is a foreigner: copy of the residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) – front and back *

Proof of employment

  • Labor contract stating position, length of employment *
  • Bank statements *
  • Statement from the employer that the applicant is granted (paid or unpaid) leave *
  • Social security booklet *

Only for company owners or self-employed applicants

  • Business register *
  • Company's tax return statement of the last 3 months *

Only if the applicant is retired

  • Pension statements from the last three months *

Only if the applicant is a student

  • Confirmation of school/university enrolment for the current year and the student card *

Proof of sufficient funds for the entire visit

  • Bank statements *
  • Formal obligation letter (= Verpflichtungserklärung). This obligation letter can be obtained at the local town office/authority in Germany (Ausländerbehörde) and must be presented in original for the visa application process. In addition, further financial evidence (your own bank statements) must also be submitted. *

Proof of family status of the applicant

  • Marriage certificate (if applicable) + ID card of the spouse + residence permit of the spouse, if they currently stay in the EU/Schengen area *
  • Birth certificate of all children of the applicant (if applicable) + ID cards of all the children + residence permits of the children, if they stay currently in the EU/Schengen area *
  • Registration certificate (proof of residence) from the local police *
